Cremation is now the most common type of funeral service in Australia, with approximately 80% of all funerals being cremation.
It is important to ensure the wishes of the deceased are followed if they are known. A cremation cannot take place if there are written instructions to the contrary.
Cremation is sometimes chosen as a lower-cost option, especially in Brisbane, where cemetery fees are very high. In regional areas, cemetery fees tend to be less expensive, so cost is not usually the main reason families choose cremation.
Cremation is a respectful, dignified process that feels right for many of today’s families. If you would like to know more about this process, your funeral director will explain it for you.
If you choose cremation
There is no necessity in law to inter the ashes or keep them in an urn. You may wish to:
- create a memorial for your loved one in a specially designed garden or wall of remembrance
- create your own memorial at home or on a property
- have the ashes scattered at a location of significance.
This is a decision that doesn’t need to be made straight away. Your funeral director will give you a range of options when you’re ready to discuss this. That may be some weeks after the funeral ceremony.
If the ashes are to be placed in a columbarium wall, the niche size will need to be confirmed.

Crematoriums in Brisbane
When deciding on which crematorium is right for you, a few things to consider might include location, traffic, parking, availability, general surrounds and the facilities and services each venue offers. The most common crematoriums we visit are listed below by area.
Ashes
Deciding how to best commemorate your loved one following their passing and what to do with their ashes, is a personal and important part of your grief journey. There are a number of options when it comes to deciding what to do with your loved ones ashes, and there is no real right or wrong choice, it all comes down to how you feel and what they have expressed as their wishes.
Interment
You might choose to inter your loved ones ashes in a memorial garden. Most of the crematoriums have memorialisation options available and range from Columbariums, Garden Niches, Memorial Rocks, and Grave Interments. To inter ashes into an existing grave, the burial rights holder will need to provide consent, and the fees paid directly to the cemetery where your existing plot is located. To arrange for memorialisation at a memorial park, it is always best to contact the venue of your choice and seek the best option that suits your needs.
Cremation Urns
Cremation Urns are a great way to express a persons unique style, interests and the life they lived. They are also great for keeping the ashes close to you and having them with you in your own home or at some place special. We have an extensive range of cremation urns available or you are welcome to supply your own urn and our team will happily transfer your loved ones ashes for you.
Cremation Jewellery
Cremation Jewellery is a great option for a small portion of ashes to be worn in a stylish and lasting jewellery piece. You can have ashes placed into pendants, charms, bracelets and a range of jewellery that is available from our cremation urn store, or you are welcome to supply your own cremation jewellery and our team will happily transfer a small portion of ashes into it for you.
Scattering Ashes
You are able to scatter ashes anywhere in QLD, except for national parks, protected wildlife areas, or protected ocean areas. You do not require a permit to scatter ashes. To ensure the ease of scattering, we have a range of scattering and eco friendly urns available on our cremation urn store, or you are welcome to supply your own scattering urn and our team will happily transfer the ashes into it for you.
Precious Stones and Gems
You may want to have your loved ones ashes turned into a precious stone or gem, a Diamond, Ruby, Sapphire or other stone of your choice. This process usually is performed outside of Australia and takes 6-12 months to be complete. It can be a costly product so we would encourage you to research reputable providers of this service.
Fireworks
Yes, you can have your loved ones ashes turned into fireworks and arrange a memorial service that culminates in an impressive fireworks display that scatters their ashes at the same time. This is a great option for younger people or those who have always said they’d like to go out with a bang!
The options for ashes are endless, can be customised to suit your loved ones style and life, and are really up to your imagination when it comes down to it. If you would like some advice or support in how best to celebrate your loved ones ashes, feel free to talk to your funeral director or contact us on 1300 043 522.
